A Call for Solidarity with Ukraine

A Call for Solidarity with Ukraine

The Bulgarian Sociological Association expresses its full support and solidarity with all Ukrainian citizens forced to defend their lives and the sovereignty of their country. Ukraine today is fighting a defensive war for the preservation of democratic values and the right to national self-determination. This is a war in defense of the values that are shared by all of us, as both citizens and sociologists, a war fought on behalf of all European citizens. We do express our deep empathy for the sacrifices of the Ukrainian people fighting for their homeland. We strongly urge Bulgarian public institutions to declare and provide full support for Ukraine and its citizens.

The Bulgarian Academy of Science and the University of Sofia already declared solidarity with Ukrainians and made their facilities – dormitories, campuses and hostels – available to Ukrainian refugees. The Bulgarian Sociological Association, as a voluntary professional organization, can only plead its members to express individually their own solidarity with refugees, according to their own capacities and understandings. Institutionally, we assert our support for Ukraine and our sincere compassion for its people. We cannot remain still and silent in front of the monstrosity of war. We do believe that all gestures of solidarity are important in this situation, when war is fought against democratic values, against the right of all citizens to choose where and how to live, to express their views freely and to choose which unions to participate in.

We stand in solidarity with the Ukrainian citizens forced to suffer all the calamities, inflicted by the war and to defend their right to live in a free and sovereign country, but also with all those Russian citizens, who are against the immoral aggression exerted by Putin’s regime towards the sovereign state of Ukraine, and who by protesting against the war risk becoming victims of the same aggression.

We call all Bulgarian citizens for solidarity with people fleeing the war and seeking asylum in Bulgaria; let us demonstrate our hospitality – a trait we pride ourselves with as a nation – by actively supporting and including people who desperately need our help today.
